the triple tootsie roll

lately, anton has discovered he can roll.

and he rolls every chance he gets.

he will start from the headboard and end up dangerously close to the edge of the bed.  this is why i cannot leave him alone on the bed anymore, even for a second.  he couldn't keep still.  he's like a wind-up toy that wouldn't stop rolling.

it's worse when it's nappy-changing time. the minute i set him down on the bed to change his nappy, and as soon as his bare bottom touches the cold rubber mat, he rolls over to his tummy, squeals, smiles and exclaims "Ewh!", apparently very proud of himself.  and plus, i think he really likes it when he's nappy-free.  now imagine  when he has poopy and i have to change him. it's such a struggle! he keeps wriggling and his legs are stronger (not to mention, fatter) now so i can barely hold his feet together to keep his bottom up so i can wipe it clean.

he's so excited about this new skill. he's even begun to roll in his sleep, obsessed as he is trying to perfect this rolling technique.  he's also discovered he can rest on his tummy while raising his hands and feet off the bed. we call this his airplane pose.  and whenever he executes special moves like these, he really makes sure he makes eye contact with somebody.  i think it is because he thinks it is the best and most impressive of his repertoire of tricks at the moment.  and when he raises himself on his elbows and arms, when he is on his tummy, poker-faced he pulls up his body as high as he could and holds the pose for as long as he could. parang yoga pose.

he is very limber.  and he gets so excited and fired up whenever we clap and cheer him on.

feeling olympic gymnast ang bagets while executing his routines, hahaha.

because he can now roll without difficulty, he now sleeps on his side.  aww, my baby's really a big boy now.

Be careful you don't mention the word "Jump" around Anton because it'll set him off into action, like a mad gymnast on a trampoline (or Prozac?). But it's very good workout for the arms, really. Anton's almost 12 lbs. effectively work as weights. Great for slimming down, strengthening and toning arms, haha.
So unless you want a work out, then, you're better off spelling out the word or avoiding it altogether in the meantime, whenever Anton's around.

just a few months ago...

...we were 2 women with bumps.

Christiane was my classmate one semester in my art studies cognates in Theory and Criticism.  I learned I was pregnant just as she was at the tail-end of her own pregnancy. So at one point we were two pregnant women bonding in the FC cafeteria, watchful of our diets, and sympathetic to each other's discomforts.

Now Jaimie her baby celebrated her first birthday today, and Anton turned 6 months a couple of days ago. And as I looked around at the party venue, I noticed there were a lot of babies between Jaimie's and Anton's ages.  And a funny thought struck me that, just a few months ago, what is now a venue filled with adorable pre-toddler age  babies would have been a venue filled with pregnant women.

it's miraculous, really. wonderful.

the day of hearts

it's the most cliche, overrated, and not to mention most commercial day of the year, but we still buy into it.

today my valentine gave me a dozen roses. i remember, when we were just a few months married,  a friend once told me to "enjoy it while the magic lasts." i'm happy to report that the magic is still very much there, and i think it's become even better than ever.

A had meant for it to be a surprise, but i unwittingly blew his cover by a single text.
this was how the text exchange between us went:

me:  Sweetie, fyi im staying home after all.  It's FA week
anyway and I'm too lazy to drive. Coding pa ako.

A   :  Naku! go to school po  :(

me:  Bkit?  ("Hmm..." i said to myself, then the gears in my
        head started grinding noisily.)

the landline phone rang shortly, and like i guessed, it was A.

me:  (teasing, pa-cute) May flowers ako 'no?

A   :  (with a tone of urgency in his voice) Punta ka na ng FA...

me:   Eh coding ako, tsaka tinatamad ako.  Sabihin mo muna
sa 'kin kung bakit...Me flowers ako, 'noh?!!!

A  :   Basta...Eh bakit mo kasi pinalitan ang routine mo...

i didn't want to spoil his fun and torture him any further, and so i promised him i will go to school to fetch the bouquet. and so i did, and a couple of hours later i was back home again.

sadly, in my rush, i forgot to take a pic of the bouquet (which was the envy of all the girls...and boys in the Vis Com Department faculty room today) before i put the roses in a vase.  you see, the sight of wilted flowers makes me sad, so i've made it a point to pay homage to the ephemeral beauty of every bouquet i receive by immortalizing them in snapshots.

made up for my oversight by arranging the lovely roses in a vase (actually a glass pitcher) and taking a pic of the arrangement by the window.

i loved what A wrote in the card.  (no, sweetie, i won't share it here. :P)   suffice it to say humaba ang buhok ko.

i am such a lucky lucky girl, to be loved by A.

anton's celebrity death match

remember that animated mtv series in claymation?  it pitted celebs most unlikely to be featured together in one stage against each other.  it was all so funny and very gory (guts always inevitably spilled out of the clay characters--most definitely not for kiddie viewing.)

well, anton has his version of that.  on one side he has winnie-the-pooh and company from the hundred acre woods, and on the other he has congo and roam representing ty's beanie babies. scroll down for the pics:

Roam vs. Piglet

Congo tramples on Pooh;  Roam gores Piglet.  Final score:  Beanie Babies 2, Hundred Acre Woods 0.

p.s.  visited the beanie babies site recently and i just found out that Congo and Roam have been "Retired" and so are no longer current--which makes them collectible!  but i've already cut their heart-shaped hang tags to make them safe for Anton to play with, and that effectively lessened their value.

a fan's day

my otherwise ordinary, mediocre work day today was incredibly bookended by dazzling celeb encounters.

this morning, when i drove to the supermarket to buy anton milk, guess who happened to be shooting in cherry foodarama?  it was no less than--omigoshyouvegottaholdontoyourseats--papa piolo himself!

Piolo

even the men apparently were not oblivious to his appeal, the way they were consumed by his presence.  there they were--shoppers, cashiers, baggers, merchandising clerks, food stall vendors, and plain kibitzers (you wonder how word goes around so fast when there's a shoot involving celebs)of all ages and kinds, men and women--all dead in their tracks, jaws slack, and, as if under the influence of some jedi mind trick, they followed piolo around with their eyes as he pushed a shopping cart, taking directions from a person who looked like he was the acting director (or he may have been the director himself).

no, the cameras weren't rolling yet--it looked like they were still rehearsing the scene.  piolo had such an appeal that made the usually busy cherry foodarama at 11 am just slightly surreal. everything seemed at a standstill.  and nobody seemed to care that there was actually another celebrity in the supermarket aside from piolo that moment--ping lacson's daughter-in-law, jodie sta. maria.

the tension in the air was so thick. it really felt like everybody held their collective breaths, and it hung so thickly in the air with the expectation of having a glimpse of the scene piolo was about to shoot, so they can mentally store it and recall it detail by precious detail to their family and friends when they get home.

it was so infectious, this energy. if i wasn't in such a rush to get to work and anton's milk was still more than 8 scoops' worth, i would have lingered and watched slack-jawed like the rest of them, and for a moment allow myself to be a fan.

but before rushing out after paying for my purchase, i decided to buy my lunch at dimsum and dumplings, because it was already a quarter to 12 and i calculated i'd get to UP at a quarter past and i might as well buy lunch.  of course the d&d vendor was watching the goings-on from her stall, and i was actually surprised she cheerfully turned to me to ask me what i wanted.

"adobo rice," i said.

she went through the motions of puttering on her little counter, and i wondered why she even bothered when she was gonna tell me anyway, with a wave of her hand, "ay, mamaya pa po ang kanin." i wondered, but didn't bother to ask, the reason why--di pa nakasaing ang kanin?  di  pa dumadating pa lang ang magdedeliver ng ulam? o di pa tapos sa pag-shoot si piolo?

so i just drove back home to drop off anton's milk and drove to the ever-reliable mcdonald's drive-thru to get my quarterpounder meal.

good thing i had a filling (albeit unhealthy) lunch.  it was enough to tide me over till my next celeb encounter at 7 PM. early tonight, at a print exhibition at the new bernal gallery at the up film center, i got to shake the hand of mario parial.

no awestruck fans at the bernal gallery, but i was starstruck just the same.  you see, i am a fan of mario parial's work.
